One evening, she confronted him.
“Who are you really?”
Kato looked at her.
“The truth is dangerous,” he said.
“I’m already living in danger.”
He studied her, then spoke carefully.
“Patrick Mugisha is involved in illegal business—fraud, land theft, corruption. People have been watching him.”
“You?” she asked.
“Something like that.”
“And my marriage?”
He didn’t deny it.
“At first… yes. It helped me stay close.”
Winfred felt the sting.
“You used me.”
“Yes,” he said quietly.
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
“But,” he added, “that is no longer the whole truth.”
“What changed?”
He looked directly at her.
